David Tennant has joined the cast of Netflix's forthcoming superhero series 'AKA Jessica Jones'. The former Doctor Who will play Zebediah Killgrave, also known as Purple Man.

Purple Man can control his foes' minds using pheromones, and can recover from severe injuries very quickly. He also brainwashed the eponymous character, which led to her retiring from life as a superhero.

It'll be quite a change of pace from 'Broadchurch'.

"I'm so honoured and excited by the prospect of David inhabiting this multifaceted character," executive producer Melissa Rosenberg said in a statement. "He can deliver the most heart-wrenching moment to the driest of lines, and all points in between. He'll make Killgrave a truly original villain."

The series sees Jessica Jones (played by Krysten Ritter) rebuilding her life after hanging up her superhero costume. She hasn't turned her back on that world entirely, however. She works as a detective who gets pulled into cases involving people with extraordinary abilities.

According to the official description, Killgrave's reappearance will "send shockwaves through the former superhero's world". So it's a major role for Tennant.

All 13 episodes of 'AKA Jessica Jones' will air on Netflix later this year. It will be the second of the streaming service's Marvel series after 'Daredevil', which starts in April.
