This series of 'Game of Thrones' has been the most popular yet, with viewers and pirates alike. And the finale was no different.

Monday night's final episode of series five was illegally downloaded a whopping 1.5 million times in just eight hours. That smashes the show's previous record.

"Never before have we seen this many downloads in such a short period of time, and last year it took half a day to reach the same number," TorrentFreak wrote.

"Based on this figure, the download count is expected to increase to more than 10 million during the days to come."

The 480p copies of the show were the most popular, probably due to their relatively small file sizes. 720p was the next popular resolution, and then 1080p.

The episode also broke the record for the most people sharing a single torrent file at the same time. At one point, 258,131 people shared the same torrent file simultaneously.

'Game of Thrones' has been the most pirated TV show over the last three years. It looks like it could take that dubious honour for the fourth year in a row.

A couple of years ago, HBO's programming president described piracy as "a compliment of sorts", and said that it was inevitable with "having a wildly successful show on a subscription network".
