new now tv box

Sky's new Now TV Box does support Full HD streams after all, despite what we were told earlier in the week. Here's what happened.

The box is basically a rebranded Roku 3, which supports streams up to 1080p resolution (aka Full HD). However, Sky said its model would only output in 720p, like its predecessor. It turns out that's codswallop – the new box does support 1080p, but Sky will continue to stream in 720p.

A Sky spokesperson told Engadget the firm has "no immediate plans" to start streaming in Full HD, as it might hamper those with slower internet connections. But still, it leaves the door open for Sky to do so in future.

It also means that any Now TV apps that stream in 1080p will look just as good as intended.

The Now TV Box is on sale now either from the Now TV website or from Argos. For £14.99, it's just about one of the best bargains you can buy. It's worth it alone to get iPlayer on your TV.

Sky has also dropped the price of its Now TV Entertainment Pass to just £1 until the end of September. And you can sign up to Sky Sports on a month-by-month basis. Happy days.
