If you want to watch films on your iPad in the car, Amazon has just the ticket. It now lets you view TV shows and films offline through its Amazon Prime Instant Video service. That means you don't need an internet connection to watch.

Instead of streaming whatever you want to watch, you save the video as a download. Then you can watch without having to rely on an internet connection and without fear of racking up a huge bill. As long as you download using Wi-Fi in the first place, of course.

The feature is only available on iPhones, iPads, Android phones and tablets and Amazon's Fire devices for now. So bad luck anyone with a laptop.

But the good news is that it's included in the £79 annual subscription fee, so if you're got a device that supports offline viewing you won't have to pay any extra.

BBC iPlayer has the same feature, but it's lacking from most TV and film streaming services.

Michael Paull, Amazon's vice president of digital video, said: "There's no doubt that the way people watch entertainment is changing – anytime, anywhere viewing is important and we are excited to provide our Prime members with offline viewing capabilities on iOS and Android platforms starting today.

"We are proud to be the first and only online subscription streaming service that enables offline viewing – on vacation, in a car, at the beach, wherever our Prime members want to watch they can, regardless of internet connection."
