bake off

'The Great British Bake Off' was the most popular show on BBC iPlayer in August.

The first four episodes of this series were the most-watched on the BBC's catch-up service, with 7.3 million views combined.

iPlayer as a whole was more popular than the previous month. The 278 million TV and radio requests was up 8% on July 2015.

Of those, 226 million were TV requests. That's up 11% on July this year, and 24% on August last year.

The other most popular shows were mostly episodes of 'EastEnders'. Period drama 'The Scandalous Lady W' was also in the top 20.

'Partners in Crime' and 'Ripper Street' – which the BBC axed after two series only for it to be rescued by Amazon – were also popular.

The BBC has announced a new kids' version of iPlayer will launch next year.

It will also cut access to iPlayer for those not holding a valid television licence fee.
