Freesat added 36,000 new customers in the last three months of 2015, bringing its total customer base just shy of 2 million.

In total, 61,000 people signed up to the service last year. It's now used by 1.93 million UK households, with over 4 million viewers every week.

Freesat is a free service, but it does offer pay service Netflix through certain Freesat-branded set-top boxes. However, that's the only pay TV service it offers – there's no Now TV, Blinkbox or Amazon Prime Video in sight.

Freesat said this growth showed that more people want connected TV without a monthly outlay.

"The most recent quarter's figures highlight the growing appetite for subscription-free connected TV," said Alistair Thom, Freesat's managing director.

"We invest in developing market-leading technology and delivering quality content to provide an unbeatable connected-TV experience, at no monthly fee. We offer over 200 subscription-free channels and popular On Demand players, more than any other free-to-air provider, which continues to attract customers."
