Sky has launched its first virtual reality app, Sky VR App. The app brings together 360-degree immersive videos from Sky and its partners, including Disney, Fox Innovation Lab and Warner Brothers.
So what can you watch? Sky has revealed two new VR videos: 'Sky Sports: Closer' which features David Beckham, and – in the first of a series of exclusive commissions by Sky – a performance from English National Ballet's production of 'Giselle' ahead of its forthcoming tour. (Though the 'Giselle' video is coming later in the autumn.)
You can also watch other videos commissioned by Sky, like the Tour de France film 'Journey to the Tour', and 'Calais: The Jungle' which focuses on the the migrant camp known as The Jungle. Partner videos include 'Star Wars: Red Carpet' which centres on the premiere of 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens', a clip from Disney's 'The Jungle Book', 'The Martian Sneak Peek' which follows the film's main character as he's stranded on Mars, 'Paul McCartney: Dance Tonight' and a VR animation called 'Invasion' which features aliens trying to take over the world.
The Beckham video sees Becks enter a Sky VR simulator which transports him and the viewer to the world's best sports events.
"It was great to work with Sky and Google on this film to launch the new Sky Virtual Reality app," Beckham said. "The team from the Sky VR studio came up with an incredible concept that shows the range of sport Sky offers. Being able to take other sports fans on a journey into some of the world's biggest sporting events was a unique opportunity."
Earlier this year, Sky created its own in-house virtual reality studio called Sky VR Studio to make its own VR videos.
