Netflix has released a teaser trailer for its forthcoming 'Castlevania' series. It's also announced that it will go live on 7th July.
The trailer is dripping with retro appeal – it even opens with someone putting the original 'Castlevania' game into the NES console, after blowing on it to dislodge any dust (a process gamers of a certain age will no doubt remember fondly).
The Netflix menu has even been given an 8-bit makeover.
However, once the trailer starts proper, we're into a thoroughly modern style of animation.
The series has some heavyweight contributors behind it. Comics legend Warren Ellis is writing it, with contributions from Kevin Kolde ('Adventure Time'). It's produced by Adi Shankar ('Dredd', 'The Grey').
Recently, Netflix also commissioned a prequel to the Jim Henson film 'The Dark Crystal', which should also please fans of a certain age. Plus it's commissioned a new stand-up comedy special from Ellen DeGeneres.
However, while Netflix does commission a lot, it doesn't rest on its laurels. It recently cancelled Baz Luhrmann's show 'The Get Down', presumably due to poor ratings. Proof that having a big name attached to a project doesn't guarantee it success.
