Videogame to film/TV adaptations have a chequered history: Super Mario Bros, Tomb Raider and Street Fighter II all failed to set the world alight when turned into TV shows or films. But Netflix is hoping to buck the trend with its latest, an anime series based on the upcoming game Ingress Prime.

Ingress Prime is made by Niantic, the company behind the global smash hit Pokemon Go. Like Pokemon Go, Ingress Prime is a mobile game that will use augmented reality to superimpose virtual elements like objects and enemies onto your view of the real world.

Niantic’s first Ingress game was overshadowed somewhat by the phenomenon that was Pokemon Go. Ingress: The Animation will serve as an introduction to Ingress Prime. Both are expected to launch around October.

The show features two main characters: Makoto and Sarah. We join them as they’re dealing with the fallout from the exotic matter that’s spreading across the globe from the Ingress story. They’ll be caught up in the battle between the Enlightened and the Resistance, and try to work out why a company is abusing this matter for its own dastardly means.
