widows 1983

You might have seen the trailer for the new Steve McQueen crime drama Widows. With Oscar-winner McQueen at the helm, and with a script written by Gone Girl author Gillian Flynn, it has some serious heavyweight talent onboard. But did you know it’s based on a British crime drama series from the 80s?

Amazon Prime Video is streaming it exclusively, so you can catch up on the original.

It’s written by Lynda La Plante – who also wrote the classic British crime drama Prime Suspect – and aired in 1983.

It tells the same basic story: when three criminals die unexpectedly, their widows find their late husbands’ plans for a robbery and decide to stage it themselves.

The widows are played by Ann Mitchell (EastEnders), Fiona Hendley (Jane), Maureen O’Farrell (Arabian Nights), and are joined by a fourth woman, played by Eva Mottley (Poor Little Rich Girls).

All 12 episodes of series one and two are available now on Prime Video.
