Head of Commercial - Energy - London

We`re also the market leader in boiler cover and broadband and continuing to grow in those sectors as wells as making waves in digital television, mobile phones and personal finance products including mortgages, credit cards, current accounts and insurance.

We are looking for a Head of Commercial for our Energy division. We strive to deliver best in class relationships, using our expertise and wealth of data at our disposal to help suppliers offer the best possible prices and service to ultimately help millions of customers get a better deal on their energy services.

The role is key to the ongoing success of Comparison’s Energy business unit, helping to define strategy and delivering the revenue and gross profit targets relating to uSwitch`s largest P&L. In a highly influential role in the wider Energy industry, the Head of Commercial for Energy will lead the Commercial team to build strong, strategic relationships with our energy supplier partners.


  • To build and deliver a plan for strong, profitable and strategic commercial relationships with a range of product suppliers and strategic partners
  • To develop partner relationships such that we are "Partner of Choice"
  • To ensure uSwitch`s commercial & commission arrangements are market leading in terms of structure and overall value
  • To identify, lead and manage new commercial initiatives to help grow the Energy business unit and strengthen our commercial relationships
  • Overall responsibility for the contractual and commercial agreements of Comparison Energy
  • To build and develop the Energy Commercial team into a sustainably successful unit that engenders the company values
  • To manage relationships with key government, regulatory and industry contacts, work with the PR team to identify potential issues to champion
  • Contribute, as key role, to the broader Comparison management team, and specifically the Commercial one.

Key responsibilities

  • Overall responsibility for negotiating, building and maintaining a portfolio of relationships with existing and new clients across a range of products contributing high tens of £million revenue to the ZPG group
  • Setting commercial strategy to support overall Energy channel goals
  • Identify new business models to protect future revenues/gross profit as the market changes and competition increases
  • Find creative ways to increase commercialisation of our existing relationships/partnerships
  • Strengthen and deepen relationships with key commercial partners
  • Identify, test and implement new or additional commercial opportunities for the channel including negotiating market-leading exclusive deals for customers
  • Overall responsibility for the delivery and growth of uSwitch`s Business Energy Brokerage
  • Responsible for the development and growth of uSwitch`s energy data & insight product
  • Responsible for delivering Energy revenue and gross profit targets, representing double-digit percentage year on year growth. Work closely with finance teams to ensure complete and accurate revenue recognition.
  • Manage and grow the boiler insurance proposition in line with FCA regulations, to support partner’s aspirations/strategies and uSwitch`s targets
  • Explore other potential related partnerships that will help support further growth and development of the business unit
  • Manage uSwitch`s Energy Commercial Team, including 2 Commercial Managers and Account Manager, and ensure strong commercial team relationships with other internal teams across marketing, technical and product functions
  • Be a source of expertise to the business on the energy industry and marketplace
  • Lobby and build relationships with key government, regulatory and industry contacts. Support construction of detailed responses to relevant Ofgem & DECC consultations
  • Be aware of macroeconomics and other world events that will/may have an impact on the business and plan accordingly
  • Help future proof the business against any competitive action or other market and regulatory changes that could impact it negative
  • Build a strong knowledge and understanding of our Energy partners to facilitate being "Partner of Choice", particularly with senior stakeholders in those businesses
  • As a senior company spokesperson, play a key role in defining the Energy PR & public affairs strategy, representing the brand in the media and at industry events
  • Build strong relationships with influential journalists at major national news outlets across press, TV and radio

Essential skills

  • Proven record managing high-value commercial relationships demonstrating significant year-on-year growth and strategic leadership
  • Exceptional negotiation skills, experience negotiating multi-£million contracts and is commercially astute
  • Significant experience directing and developing strategic client accounts with a drive to deliver best-in-class relationships and ability to sell and market when required.
  • Proven project management experience with an entrepreneurial approach/methodology to developing new business/revenue streams
  • Strong public affairs experience managing industry, government and regulatory relationships
  • Exceptionally numerate and literate

Desired skills

  • Experience within the price comparison industry or energy industry
  • PR experience within high-exposure broadcast (live/pre-record, down-the-line/studio, TV/radio) and print media
  • Strong market knowledge of the industry
