Saving money on your phone bills isn’t simply a case of switching phone suppliers. There are a wide variety of phone plans offering different phone services, each offering different ways to use your phone and access cheaper phone tariffs.

Phone services are available from direct and indirect access companies.

Direct access companies offer a phone service by installing a line into your home. This includes BT, Kingston (in Hull) and the cable companies.

Indirect access companies provide a phone service by using your existing line and simply re-directing your calls over their network. Companies providing indirect access phone services include Primus, Tiscali, Euphony, First:Telecom, Homecall, Alpha Telecom and Swiftcall.

Prefix number

This phone service is suitable for customers who are looking to supplement their existing supplier. It can be used over BT and cable, and has the advantage that it can just be used for certain calls.

Autodialler

This phone service is suitable for customers who are looking to replace their call supplier. It can be used over BT and cable, however Carrier Pre-Selection (CPS) – see below - is more commonly used over BT. Autodialler's have the advantage that they can be used over cable, whereas CPS can't.

Carrier Pre-Selection (CPS)

This phone service is suitable for customers looking to replace their call supplier. The big advantage of CPS is that the customer doesn’t have to do anything once they have switched. This is by far the most popular method.

All of these phone services will require you to pay two bills, one to BT for their line rental and the other to the supplier who carries the calls. However, you can also switch your line and calls with Wholesale Line Rental.

This phone service is basically the same as CPS, but with the added benefit that you pay line rental to the company who carries your calls e.g. TalkTalk, the Post Office etc. They then pay the line rental to BT, meaning that you only receive one bill from your new supplier, and nothing at all from BT. Nothing else will actually change, you will still have the same telephone line and number, but with cheaper calls and the additional benefit of not having to pay two bills.
