What can I switch to?

You can keep your line rental with your current supplier but switch your calls to a second supplier. You will receive two bills: one for your line rental and one for your calls. Here are the ways to redirect your calls through another supplier:

• Automatically redirect all your calls. You can do this over a standard (BT) line, but you still have to pay your line supplier for your line rental. You will receive two bills, but will pay less overall than you did. (This is called Carrier Pre Selection)

• Redirect your calls using an autodialler. You can redirect your calls via another supplier’s network by plugging a small adaptor into your phone socket. This is available to both customers who use a standard (BT) line or a cable line

• Dial a prefix. Your new supplier will give you a four digit number (or free phone number for cable suppliers), which you dial before calls to redirect them through your new supplier

You may be able to save money on your line rental too, by switching to a supplier that covers both your calls and your line rental. This is called Wholesale Line Rental and does not require any work to be done on your line. Your phone number will not change either. It also means you will only receive one bill.

You can use a cable line instead of a standard one, so you don’t have to pay line rental to BT.

Your local cable company (ntl or Telewest) will install a new cable line into your home and connect your existing phone extensions for free. Normally, you don't have to change your phone number and included in the price is a basic package of digital TV channels, which you can upgrade later if you want.

In the UK, around five million people use a cable provider for their calls. It’s available to about half of the UK’s households. We will include cable plans in your results, if they are available in your postcode.

Unless you specify, we include all the options in your results. That way, you can compare all plans based on cost and decide which one you want. The cost of line rental is factored into your results, even if the deal is with a second supplier. So, if the savings are significant, you may decide it’s worth getting two bills or switching to cable.
