uSwitch Energy Awards 2018

Every year, uSwitch runs an independent Energy Customer Satisfaction Report, this year surveying more than 17,000 energy consumers

Consumers are asked to give their opinions regarding satisfaction with their supplier(s) across 12 categories: having their say on everything from customer service to reward schemes, transfer processes to meter services. The results are in:

#1 — Octopus Energy Customer Satisfaction 2018

Supplier of the year 2018 — 96% customer satisfaction

Octopus Energy has been voted the nation's top energy supplier for overall satisfaction, with an impressive rating of 96%.

The independent supplier is also awarded the following accolades, due to their top performance in related survey categories:

  • Most Likely to be Recommended
  • Best Customer Service
  • Best Online Experience
  • Best Billing Services

  • #2 — Bulb Customer Satisfaction 2018

    Supplier of the Year — Runner up 2018

    A customer satisfaction score of %92, saw Bulb in second position.

    Bulb managed to top the charts in six survey categories, winning the following awards:

    • Best Green services
    • Best Deal for You
    • Easiest to Switch To
    • Best Account Management
    • Best Energy Saving Support
    • Best Value for Money
  • #3 — The Utility Warehouse Customer Satisfaction 2018

    The Utility Warehouse

    For the first time in the history of the awards, The Utility Warehouse have been included in data, and stack up well against the likes of the big six.

    With a score of 90% for Overall Customer Satisfaction, they come in third of the 15 suppliers ranked.

    They also managed to top the rankings in the following categories:

    • Best Rewards
    • Best Meter Reading Services

    The supplier was runner-up in the following categories:

    • Best Customer Service
    • Best Billing Services

  • #4 — Ovo Energy Customer Satisfaction 2018

    Ovo achieved an Overall Customer Satisfaction score of 86%: a decline of nine percentage points from the satisfaction score they received last year. With the inclusion of newer, smaller suppliers in the awards, Ovo have moved from 1st to 4th place.

    Their best result was placing as runner-up for Best Account Management.

  • #5 — First Utility Customer Satisfaction 2018

    First Utility's ranking was also affected by newer entrants, as they fell two percentage points and landed in 5th position. Their Overall Customer Satisfaction score was 85%

    The supplier came runner-up in the following categories:

    • Best App
    • Best Meter Reading Services
  • #6 — Utilita Customer Satisfaction 2018

    Utilita has been included for the first time in the history of the awards.

    The supplier received an Overall Customer Satisfaction score of 81%

    It managed to swoop the top award for the following categories:

    • Best App
    • Best Smart Meter Experience

    Utilita came runner-up for Best Energy Saving Support.

  • #7 — Green Star Energy Customer Satisfaction 2018

    Green Star Energy received an Overall Customer Satisfaction rating of 81%, which sees it land in 7th position out of the 15 suppliers.

    Their best result came from the Green Services survey category where they placed 3rd.

  • #8 — Co-op Energy Customer Satisfaction 2018

    Co-op Energy received an Overall Customer Satisfaction rating of 78%.

    Co-op Energy's best results came in the categories of Green services, Value for Money, and Account Management where they placed 5th of 15.

  • #9 — Sainsbury's Energy Customer Satisfaction 2018

    Sainsbury's Energy received an Overall Customer Satisfaction Rating of 76%.

    Their best result came from the Rewards category where they placed 6th.

  • #10 — ScottishPower Customer Satisfaction 2018

    Large Supplier of the Year

    ScottishPower has been awarded Large Supplier of the Year 2018, achieving the top score for Overall Customer Satisfaction out of the big six. With a score of 71%, ScottishPower have increased one percentage point and take the crown from last year's winner, E.ON.

  • #11 — SSE Customer Satisfaction 2018

    SSE were just pipped to the post by ScottishPower for the title of Large Supplier of the Year, gaining a similar 71% Overall Customer Satisfaction score.

    SSE's best result was in the Smart Meter Experience category, placing 8th.

  • #12 — EDF Energy Customer Satisfaction 2018

    EDF Energy scored an Overall Customer Satisfaction score of 70%.

    Their best result was placing 8th for Account Management.

  • #13 — E.ON Customer Satisfaction 2018

    E.ON received a score of 70% for Overall Customer Satisfaction. This is a drop of nine percentage points from their 2017 score, where they came out top of the big six suppliers.

    Their best result came from placing 6th for Smart Meter Experience.

  • #14 — British Gas Customer Satisfaction 2018

    British Gas received an Overall Customer Satisfaction score of 68%. They've dropped seven percentage points from their 2017 score.

    The big six suppliers' best ranking came from Smart Meter Experience, where they placed 2nd.

  • #15 — npower Customer Satisfaction 2018

    npower’s rating of 65% sees it fall two percentage points below its 2017 score. It's npower's tenth consecutive year at the bottom of the rankings for Overall Customer Satisfaction.


*The uSwitch Octopus 12M Fixed exclusive tariff costs £904 per year which is £232 less than the average big six standard variable rate tariff of £1136 per year. Based on the average bill size for dual fuel customers consuming medium energy usage as defined by Ofgem (3,100 kWh of electricity and 12,000 kWh of gas per year), paying by monthly direct debit, with paperless billing. Prices averaged across all regions.
