Ofcom’s decision to consult on “end of contract notifications” is one step closer to helping consumers get a better deal, says Uswitch

Commenting on Ofcom’s decision to consult on ‘end of contract notifications in July 2018 as part of their work to help consumers get a better deal, Richard Neudegg, head of regulation at Uswitch.com says: “We have been campaigning to ensure consumers are given the facts in the communications industry, highlighting how a lack of end of contract notifications across mobile, broadband and TV services is having a detrimental impact on consumers, often costing them money and keeping them unknowingly languishing on slow or poorly suited services.

“The figures speak for themselves – 15% of mobile customers and 32% of broadband users have fallen out of contract. With no requirement to be informed, consumers across the UK are racking up combined additional charges of £41 per second.

“The vast majority of consumers (89%) say that an end of contract notification would encourage them to seek a better suited deal or better value service.

“Today’s announcement doesn’t come soon enough. The introduction of end of contract notifications would finally see the communications industry catch up with others such as insurance and energy.

““Whilst not a done deal that Ofcom will implement this, it is one step closer to victory for consumers who deserve to know the facts and shouldn’t be made to jump through hoops.”

Uswitch’s Connectivity without Complexity campaign has been looking at these key issues and exploring their impact on consumers. We believe it’s time the industry gave the facts – being open and upfront with the information that matters, removed the needless hoops that consumers are made to jump through and worked to ensure the road to faster, more reliable connectivity is a journey for all.
