Uswitch expert comments on the launch of Sky Stream

Ernest Doku, telecoms expert at Uswitch.com, comments: “The launch of Sky Stream is a bold move, suggesting Sky has listened to consumer demands for greater flexibility from their telecoms providers.

“By allowing viewers to get the Sky experience by simply plugging a device into their televisions, the company is expanding focus beyond the TV and broadband bundles that have been the bedrock of its UK business. Instead Sky is highlighting its partnership with Netflix as its point of difference in offering great value.

“Non-Sky customers should now be able to access the TV packages on offer more easily and affordably than before. The option of a 31-day rolling plan, following in the footsteps of Virgin Media’s own Stream service, will also allow users to drop and add channels without signing up for another lengthy contract.

“Yet if this is the final death knell for the satellite dish, Sky needs to be clear what this means for customers with unreliable broadband, or who live in areas with slower connections.

“Sky Stream also raises the question over whether the existing Sky Glass is now worth the money. Its launch last year revolutionised the TV viewing experience, giving customers access to an immense library of channels and services all in one place.

“If Sky Stream customers can now have access to this without needing a special TV, we could see it become what SIM-only is to mobiles.”
