More good news for consumers looking to cut mobile bills as BT launches SmartTalk

Commenting on BT’s new app – SmartTalk – which launched today, Ernest Doku, telecoms expert at Uswitch.com, says: “SmartTalk is a great tool for savvy consumers who want to get the most for their money. From today, using just a nifty app and an internet connection, BT customers will be able to use any inclusive minutes from their home phone deal – which may otherwise go to waste – on their smartphone. This could lead to big savings for mobile customers who find it good to talk when they’re out and about.

“But the icing on the cake is that this app could allow consumers to bypass expensive roaming charges. This could end bill shock for those wanting to phone home when travelling abroad.

“This launch follows the announcement from Virgin Media last year about its own app – SmartCall – which will give the same benefits to its customers when it launches this year. This means that customers with two of the UK’s biggest home phone providers could enjoy substantial monthly savings on their mobile bills.

“The one issue with both apps is that they need an internet connection. Virgin’s works from wi-fi only, whereas BT’s can also use a 3G connection. This means smartphone users won’t be able to take advantage of their landline minutes wherever they are, or at least not without eating into their data allowance. But being able to enjoy free calls to those back home when you’re on holiday, could more than make up for this inconvenience.”
