Following the launch of Virgin Media’s new mobile tariffs, including the UK’s first to include unlimited calls to 08 numbers, Ernest Doku, mobiles expert at Uswitch.com, says: “This latest range of deals certainly shows a new phase in Virgin Media’s plans – a shake-up that underlines its intentions to become a major player in the mobile market.
“Following recent changes to include a wider selection of the latest smartphones, these new packages – with unlimited data at a market-leading price – really throw Virgin Media into the mix in terms of offering serious value for money.
“By addressing mobile users’ big concerns, such as insurance and data usage, Virgin is offering a selection of deals that deliver on service and stack up favourably in terms of monthly cost. And with consumers often getting stung by calling 08 numbers from their mobile – including 0800 ones which they assume to be free – the really interesting news is that Virgin is helping to protect those in the dark about these costs, by being the UK’s first provider to offer unlimited freephone and premium rate numbers.
“However, as is often the case with the network, the true winners are those customers who are already signed up to other Virgin Media services. Its TV and broadband customers will get a £5 monthly discount – meaning the VIP tariff starts at just £26 a month – as well as mobile insurance. For everyone else, a starting cost of £33 isn’t quite so market-leading – in fact getting their hands on a shiny new Samsung Galaxy S4 will be an expensive move for those without the full Virgin benefits.
“But while the pay monthly contracts will have Virgin Media jostling for position in comparison tables, it is the VIP SIM Only package that truly impresses. £15 for unlimited minutes, texts and data, on a 30-day rolling contract? Nothing comes close.”
