Ofcom proposes measures to boost superfast broadband competition

Commenting on Ofcom measures to boost superfast broadband competition Marie-Louise Abretti, broadband expert at Uswitch.com, says: “A faster and more reliable broadband service could revolutionise how both businesses and consumers get online. Yet despite already being available to two thirds of the UK, super-fast broadband has yet to be embraced by British internet users. One huge obstacle is cost – our research shows that 48% of people think it is just too expensive.

“So Ofcom’s plans to encourage stiffer competition amongst the ISPs that offer it will be very welcome. A more competitive market should mean bigger savings for consumers looking to cut their household spending.

“But targeting the market at wholesale level – offering monetary savings to broadband providers that are switching people – means it’ll be up to ISPs to make sure that cost savings are passed on to their customers. And with providers potentially saving up to £40 per customer, per switch, Ofcom must ensure this happens. We’d hope this move will see often hefty set-up fees scrapped, or at least reduced.”
