Ofcom proposes measures to encourage competition

Commenting on Ofcom’s proposals for new prices for landline and broadband services, Marie-Louise Abretti, broadband expert at Uswitch.com, says: “Any measures that encourage stiffer competition in the market are most welcome, as they should make copper broadband and landline services more affordable. Although the potential savings are fairly minimal – at most £7 per customer per year – every little helps when households are feeling the pinch, especially when it comes to cutting the cost of such a household essential.

“In spring 2014 when a final decision is made, it will be up to providers to ensure financial savings are passed on to consumers. We need to ensure this happens.

“However the real highlight are the figures showing a 12% rise in competition in rural areas – this is very promising indeed. Until recently, those in more isolated areas have had to take what they can get. But more choice means being able to shop around to cut the cost of broadband and home phone bills or to get a better speed. This is something that customers in urban areas may take for granted – but it’s an area in which rural households have been left behind.”
