TalkTalk offers low cost broadband without landline calls

Commenting on TalkTalk’s new £2.50 unlimited broadband, which comes without any landline calls included, Adam Kirby, telecoms expert at Uswitch.com, says: “This deal could be just what savvy consumers are looking for – and possibly a sign of things to come for the humble landline. With more and more consumers chatting on the go instead of waiting until they get home, this plan could be the first of its kind, giving people a way of only paying for what they need – unlimited broadband without calls – at a low cost.

“The majority of broadband packages include landline calls, but with plenty of minutes now included in most mobile phone deals, many will feel like they’re paying for a service they don’t need.

“But for those who do use their home phone, with this plan they will only pay for the calls they actually make, and they should also be protected from unexpected bills thanks to warning notifications when call costs reach certain amounts. TalkTalk’s new plan also offers more flexibility, giving consumers the choice to add ‘call boosts’ on a monthly basis for times when they will be using their landline.

“However, for those who make more than the odd call from their landline, this plan might not be the right one – they may do better choosing one with inclusive free minutes to give them peace of mind. Adding anytime calls to TalkTalk’s deal will take monthly bills to £8, meaning some other deals will be cheaper over the first year.

“Therefore, while this could prove a great deal for many – especially those who don’t use their phone at home – it’s vital that consumers think carefully about how much they use their landline before signing up.”
