Vodafone bonus sparks 4G data battle

Commenting on the news that Vodafone will boost its 4G plans with an additional 4GB of data for all who sign up before the end of October, Ernest Doku, telecoms expert at Uswitch.com, says: “Vodafone’s data boost could really be the shift needed to kick the UK 4G market into high gear. While prices haven’t been driven down by added competition, we have seen providers jostle for position by offering perks, as well as become more generous with their mobile data allowances. This is great news, as it will finally give consumers the chance to enjoy the benefits of superfast surfing on their mobiles without the fear of rocketing towards their data limits.

“While EE is all but certain to win in a race of superfast speeds at the moment, a wealth of data – as well as mobile access to Sky Sports or Spotify – at a similar price certainly makes Vodafone a compelling option.

“However, Vodafone’s Achilles heel is still, for now at least, coverage. EE now serves 100 cities and even O2, which launched on the same day, already has coverage in three times as many cities.

“But with Birmingham, Coventry, Leicester, Nottingham and Sheffield all set to go live on 28th September, this data boost could be the difference for some waiting to make the leap to 4G. And upgrading early and enjoying the benefits of streaming music and sport ahead of launch in your area is a viable option, particularly with an additional 4GB of data to do it on.

“With an array of newly announced smartphones poised for release – including a new iPhone – as well as Three’s own superfast service around the corner, timing is perfect for consumers to start doing their homework and comparing 4G mobile deals from the major providers. It may pay to play the waiting game for a little while longer before joining the 4G revolution.”
