Uswitch welcomes TalkTalk’s move to tackle nuisance calls for free

Commenting on the news that TalkTalk today becomes the first and only provider to offer all privacy calling features free of charge, Marie-Louise Abretti**, telecoms expert at [Uswitch.com](/mobiles/), says: **“The landline may be fast becoming a thing of the past, but nuisance calls and scams aren’t. And while use of the landline is generally dwindling, there are still some – such as the elderly or vulnerable – who are largely reliant on their home phone for staying in touch.

“This is why nuisance calls and scams are such a huge problem, leaving some consumers too frightened even to answer their own phones. Such is the anxiety these calls can cause that nearly one in ten (8%) never answer their landlines because they are worried it will be a sales call, while three in ten (29%) only answer if they are aware that someone they know is trying to get in touch.

“It is unacceptable that people are left feeling trapped in this way, therefore any attempt to help shield consumers from nuisance calls is extremely welcome. While a number of providers have already taken steps to help protect consumers, such as enabling them to reject calls from anonymous callers, until now they have charged people for this service. However, from today TalkTalk is making this service free.

“This is great news for all its customers, but especially for those who were having to choose between protecting themselves from nuisance calls and keeping a lid on their bills. It’s particularly welcome as those who rely most heavily on their landlines are often those who require the most protection, but can least afford to pay for it. We now hope that other providers follow TalkTalk’s lead and also start to protect their customers from this scourge free of charge.”
