iPhone 5S holds top spot for ninth consecutive month

  • The iPhone 5S is still Britain’s most popular mobile after nine months at the top of the mobile chart, while the iPhone 5C is in second place

  • The Samsung Galaxy S5 is already the UK’s third most popular phone, having gone on sale in early April

  • Samsung is the most popular manufacturer with five of the top ten spots.

The spell cast over the market by the iPhone 5S remains unbroken as it holds onto the title of the UK’s most popular smartphone for the ninth consecutive month, according to the Uswitch.com Mobile Tracker, which is based on live searches, pre-orders and sales.

The Galaxy S5 gained early popularity when it went on sale in April but has failed to achieve the seemingly impossible and knock the iPhone 5S off the top spot. However, it has managed to remain in the top three since its launch, followed closely by its predecessor, the S4.

While Samsung and Apple hold onto the top five spots, lower down the chart there are some other manufacturers winning over the British public. The HTC One M8 is in seventh position and proves the Taiwanese makers’ latest model, packed full of features, has struck a chord with the tech-savvy mobile user. However, this sleek brushed aluminium design comes with a hefty starting price of £28 per month, including a free handset, making it the most expensive handset in the chart, bar the iPhone 5S.

However, cost doesn’t seem to be the main priority for those choosing new handsets as the two cheapest deals, the Samsung S4 Mini (£18.99 p/m) and the Samsung S3 (£20 p/m), fall in ninth and tenth place respectively.

Sony has one handset in the top ten – the Xperia Z2 – which has jumped up two positions to sixth place this month. The phone is geared at those who want high quality media from their phone, boasting 4K video recording and a 20.7 megapixel camera, not to mention a fully waterproof casing.

June also saw the announcement of the Amazon Fire, the company’s first smartphone, which is already causing a big stir. However, the handset is only currently on sale in the USA with no confirmation on when, if ever, it will come to the UK.

Number one hadset – Apple’s iPhone 5S is the number one phone in June

New entries – No new entries

Biggest losers – the Samsung Galaxy Note 3, the Samsung Galaxy S3 and the HTC One M8 have each dropped one place in the chart.

Rob Kerr, mobile expert at Uswitch.com, says: “The iPhone 5S remains untouchable, despite the plethora of new handsets entering the charts. Even nine months on from its launch it is still the most expensive pay-monthly phone in the chart, proving that diehard Apple fans are still willing to pay top dollar for their favourite brand.

“Although the tracker is dominated by two players, Samsung and Apple, we are seeing some great handsets emerging from other providers who are all looking to target a different audience in order to gain market share. Whether it’s music lovers, gamers or people who rely on their phones for high-quality photos and videos, there’s a phone out there to suit every need, although some are not getting the credit they deserve.

“Amazon has come to the smartphone party late but it seems that their time may not have been wasted as they have created a top-of-the-range handset with some pretty impressive features. What’s more they have tapped into the popularity of on-demand, giving users access to millions of books, movies and music through their Prime subscription service. However, there’s no confirmation the phone will come to the UK, as it is currently only available Stateside.

“But if it does, this summer will see an impressive fight between the manufacturers as Amazon could potentially go head to head with the new iPhone 6, rumoured to be launching in September.”
