Uswitch.com comments on Ofcom’s UK broadband speeds research

Commenting on Ofcom’s eleventh annual report measuring UK broadband connection speeds, Ewan Taylor-Gibson, broadband expert at Uswitch.com, says: “Average speeds might be rising but, in some parts of the country, UK broadband services are still as temperamental as a stubborn mule – and fibre speeds are even slowing.

“It’s a worry, as it suggests these may get slower as more Brits make the switch to faster fibre services.

“The data shows it’s a provider as well as a postcode lottery for broadband customers, who pay the price as speeds fluctuate wildly between peak and off-peak hours.

“Our consumer speed test data shows that – across the UK’s 50 largest towns and cities – average speeds drop by 21% between the fastest time of day for surfing, 5am, and the peak time of 9pm.

“A consistent, reliable home broadband service is the bare minimum consumers expect in this day and age, when internet is considered an essential service.”
