The Labour Party has today called for MPs to vote in favour of granting the regulator, Ofgem, the power to force energy companies to pass on savings from falling wholesale prices. Responding to the announcement, Ann Robinson, Director of Consumer Policy at Uswitch.com, says: “With the average bill now at £1,265 – 168% higher than a decade ago – any measure that could help relieve the pressure on hard-pressed consumers should be seriously considered.
“While quick to pass on rising costs, the big six energy suppliers have yet to reduce bills for the majority of their customers who are on standard tariffs. We have been calling for some time now for one of the big six to cut their standard prices, laying down the gauntlet for the others to follow suit. In the meantime, the best advice for consumers is to shop around, especially as there is a whopping £330 per year difference between the best deal on the market and the average standard tariff.”
