Uswitch comments on EU law for compulsory in car tracking devices

Commenting on the news that the EU has passed a law making tracking devices that alert the emergency services in the event of an accident compulsory from 2018, Rod Jones, insurance expert at Uswitch.com, says: “Any technology designed to save lives should be welcomed. But consumers will rightly ask who else their personal driving information might be shared with and for what purpose. The EU must urgently clarify the privacy policy around these new devices.

“Our research shows that nearly two thirds of Brits are already concerned about ‘big brother’ style surveillance when it comes to existing opt-in ‘black box’ telematics technology, despite the fact these devices are proven to generate significant savings for consumers. Although the EU-backed e-Call device will be compulsory for new cars, telematics technology will still need the support of the public if it’s to be used more widely.”
