Overcomplicated bills major barrier to consumers engaging with energy market, says Uswitch

Commenting on a Citizens’ Advice report out today which estimates that energy companies pay around £125m dealing with customer complaints about bills each year, Ann Robinson, Director of Consumer Policy at Uswitch.com, says: “It’s hugely disappointing that billing problems continue to be the biggest source of complaints against suppliers.

“Overcomplicated bills are one of the biggest barriers preventing consumers getting more engaged with the energy market. Despite Ofgem’s reforms last April, energy bills remain unnecessarily complex – our research shows just 30 per cent of customers say their bills are easier to understand as a result.

“More needs to be done to help consumers understand the language and breakdown of their bills. People who are armed with clear information in an understandable format will be in a stronger position to take control of their energy We believe that bill reform by the industry is the first step towards helping consumers show an active interest in the energy market, helping them to use less, waste less and pay less.”
