Commenting on the launch of the new LG G5 smartphone, Rob Kerr, mobiles expert at Uswitch.com says: “Offering a range of handsets to suit different mobile users is key for any phone maker, but LG has trumped this by offering multiple handsets in one phone.

“LG is stimulating innovation in a declining market, moving modular phones out of the R&D lab into our hands, with expansion kits that will please audiophiles and camera enthusiasts alike.

“It offers a great core device, loads of accessories and top-tier collaborations to turbo charge your device if you’re that way inclined.

“Things like drone controllers, VR, remote controlled robots and 360-degree cameras, all put a shot in the arm of what many feel is a tired sector.

“Interestingly, it’s marketed at the masses, rather than early adopters. The excitement comes from being able to easily add new elements or functionality as more new modules come to market.

“Cost could be a factor, as the prices haven’t been released yet and there is the danger that this could seem – to the average mobile user – either too gimmicky or too much hassle.

“But no other mobile manufacturer is moving in this direction, taking the modular phone concept and making it a reality today. Between that, the Star Wars-style rolling robot, the VR headset and the dual-camera, they’re bringing much of the excitement that the mobile market has been missing.”
