New Ofgem switching figures show energy customers saved £957m in 2015

New figures published today by Ofgem reveal that 6.1 million domestic energy supply accounts were switched in 2015, up 15% since 2014. Commenting on the new data, Uswitch.com energy expert, Tom Lyon, says: “It’s great to see more people catching on to the fact that loyalty doesn’t pay. These new figures mean that consumers potentially saved almost a billion pounds last year, simply by switching to a cheaper deal.

“This is evidence that customers are getting fed up with high bills and poor service. The latest round of inadequate price cuts from the big six will do nothing to persuade consumers to stick with their current supplier, especially when there’s a £339 difference between the cheapest and the most expensive tariff.

“Any increase in switching will help boost competition in the market, which ultimately means that energy companies will have to work a lot harder to keep their customers.”

Notes to editors

Average saving per account (gas only/electricity only/dual fuel gas and electricity) of Switch.com customers during 2015 was £156.85 x number of accounts switched in 2015 (Ofgem figures) is 6,100,000 = £956,812,422.
