Uswitch comments on government’s whiplash claim consultation

Commenting on the government’s proposed measures to crack down on minor whiplash injuries, estimated to save £40 per motor insurance policy, Rod Jones, insurance expert at Uswitch.com, says: “False whiplash claims have been pushing up costs for innocent motorists for far too long, so it’s a relief to see the government finally taking action.

“However, these measures will only have a real impact on premiums if insurers honour their pledge to pass savings directly onto consumers. Plus, the government’s proposed saving only covers half the cost that consumers bear for whiplash claims – on average £90 per driver.

“In the meantime, innocent drivers can use the latest technology such as black box car insurance policies or dashcams to protect themselves against fraudulent claims. A black box installed in the car can monitor driving data such as speed during an accident, exposing the tricks of whiplash fakers. Dashcams can also create a video record of the road to bolster a genuine case or weed out a fraudulent claim.”
