Uswitch comments on Ofcom fining Plusnet for continuing to bill former customers

Commenting on the announcement that Plusnet has been fined £880,000 by Ofcom for continuing to bill former customers, Richard Neudegg, head of regulation at Uswitch.com, comments: “Ofcom’s decision to hand an £880,000 fine to Plusnet is yet another reminder to providers that the regulator will not tolerate billing mistakes. Customers need to have confidence that providers are getting it right.

“For those that have ended their contract they need to be reassured that no further money will be taken for a service they have ceased to used.

“In the case of Plusnet, 1,025 customers who had cancelled either their landline or broadband service continued to be billed, meaning they were overcharged by £530,775 in total. Plusnet has only been able to refund £212,140 of this to 356 customers.

“Whilst it is reassuring that Plusnet has sought to address the issue, that’ll be little comfort to the two thirds affected that are still out of pocket.

“Plusnet overcharged former customers between May 2011 and September 2015. If you are a former Plusnet customer and think you might have been impacted, complain to Plusnet directly –  you might be due a refund. If you’re unhappy with the response, you can escalate it to the relevant free dispute resolution service, which for Plusnet is CISAS.”
