Commenting on the news that renewable energy supplier Bulb is to reduce its standard variable tariff by 2.5% from Monday (24 April), Claire Osborne, energy expert at Uswitch.com, says: “Amidst the doom and gloom of recent price rises, this cut shows that there could be light at the end of the tunnel for energy customers.
“Bulb raised prices by 7% in November 2016 but this cut will make its tariff £888 a year – £249 cheaper than the average big six standard plan and the cheapest green plan on the market.
“Big six customers have not only endured eye-watering standard tariff price hikes this year, but they’ve also seen the cheapest deals replaced with more expensive plans. Bulb’s cut is the first price reduction this year, laying down the gauntlet for others in the market to follow suit now that wholesale prices are starting to fall.
“Bulb’s price cut shows how a competitive market can work, proving that competition – not heavy handed market intervention – is the most effective way to drive down prices for consumers.”
