Uswitch comments on the launch of the HTC U11

Commenting on the launch of the HTC U11, Ernest Doku, mobiles expert at Uswitch.com, comments: “Phone fans have become so used to incremental design changes to their favourite handsets that any innovative step – whether seemingly esoteric or essential – quickly becomes a talking point.

“HTC has created a range of decent and reliable handsets over the last few years – but in a sector swamped by players with big marketing budgets, HTC has found it challenging to deliver a handset that shouts above the din.

“With the launch of the HTC U11, it could just have made some real noise. The handset’s most distinctive feature – a squeezable ‘scroll and select’ function – is a considered play for users who crave the full use of their screen.

“The key here is to make sure the functionality of the Edge Sense is integral to the phone’s overall functionality, as well as can be leveraged by third-party apps, otherwise users could pretty quickly find it a tacked-on fad.

“With this handset, the Taiwanese manufacturer has also tapped into the connected technology boom by putting its virtual assistant front and centre – HTC Sense Companion claims to combine the retail nous of Amazon’s Alexa and the search engine prowess of Google Assistant for a holistic voice-activated experience.

“Of course, the price point will play a key role here in persuading both the initiated and smartphone virgins alike that this handset is worth a punt – stray too closely to the flagship efforts of Apple and Samsung and they may find that despite the allure for something new, many fall for the familiar.”
