Uswitch comments on SSE plans to move energy customers away from Standard Variable Tariffs

SSE has written to the Government about its plans for the future of Standard Variable Tariffs.

Commenting on the proposals, Claire Osborne, energy expert at Uswitch.com, says: “It’s significant that four of the big six suppliers have now announced moves to reduce the number of their customers on Standard Variable Tariffs. The message is finally getting through that energy companies cannot just leave households to languish on these poor value deals.

“But this is only one part of the story. Suppliers should be reaching out to all customers – whether coming to the end of a fixed deal or already on an SVT – so they are aware they can shop around for a better deal rather than being rolled onto the first plan they are offered. Otherwise competition will not be working effectively in the market.”
