SSE/Npower merger given provisional clearance by competition watchdog

The Competition and Markets Authority has given provisional clearance to the proposed merger between SSE and Npower – two of Britain’s biggest energy suppliers – after finding that it did not raise competition concerns.

Commenting on the news, Emma Bush, Uswitch.com energy expert, says:

“The CMA rightly points to the fact that with over 70 suppliers in the market and record numbers of households switching, consumers are able to save hundreds of pounds a year by moving away from rip off standard tariffs.

“The acid test will be whether any new company can provide better customer service and more attractive deals for energy customers. If the proposed merger goes ahead, Uswitch is calling for customers affected to be given help to check their current deal is right for them – to shop around and choose a cheaper deal rather than staying on a more expensive standard variable tariff.”
