Huawei faces extra hurdles as P40 range launched

Ru Bhikha, mobiles expert at Uswitch.com, comments: “At a time when smartphone sales are down 38% year-on-year, Huawei faces the additional handicap of being unable to include US apps and services like Google Maps, YouTube and the Google Play Store on its devices.

“The Chinese manufacturer confidently unveiled the Huawei P40, P40 Pro, and P40 Pro+, a beautiful device with an ‘overflow display’ that spills over all four rounded edges.

“The P40 has a 6.1-inch screen, while the P40 Pro and Pro+’s 6.58-inch display is a fraction larger than the iPhone 11 Pro. Despite having similar screen sizes, the Huawei device is smaller due to reduced bezels and its ‘waterfall’ display.

“The camera set-up is bulging at the seams across all three models, with three cameras on the P40, four on the Pro, and an incredible five on the Pro+.

“The base model has a 50MP main camera, plus 16MP ultrawide and 8MP telephoto lenses, alongside a colour temperature sensor. The Pro model has a 40MP snapper, 5x zoom 12MP telephoto lens and a time-of-flight sensor to accompany the main camera.

“The Pro+ also has a 10x optical telephoto lens – a huge draw for photography fans – which when added to a 10x digital zoom creates a 100x magnification like that seen in the Samsung S20.

“There is genuine innovation in Huawei’s ‘Golden Snap’ technology, which uses artificial intelligence to delete passers-by from your snaps, remove reflections, and choose the best moment in pictures where people are moving.

“Huawei boasts that its 4K video takes the best low-light footage ever, which – when combined with the video zoom – lets you take a video of the moon, if you so wish.

“Another neat trick is the dual-view video, which lets you film in both close-up and wide angle at the same time, allowing users to simultaneously pick out detail in a wide view.

“Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and every smartphone manufacturer believes they have the best camera set-up, but with the P40 range, Huawei is making a strong argument for their snapper.

“But no matter how good the picture you take, you won’t be able to share it with friends on Instagram and Facebook due to the ongoing US app ban.

“You can’t get away from the fact that a flagship phone without access to Google’s core services puts the P40 range at quite a disadvantage.

“The Huawei P40 boasts phenomenal hardware, but we hope it won’t be hamstrung by wider political arguments.”
