UK households face £63 million 'bill shock' as fixed energy deals come to an end

  • Energy bills are set to increase by £63 million at the end of November as 57 fixed plans come to an end

  • Bills could rise by £155 for impacted households if they roll onto a costly Standard Variable Tariff (SVT)

  • More than 810,000 homes will be hit by price hikes unless they change to a new fixed tariff

  • Uswitch.com advises consumers to switch to a new fixed deal before they are automatically rolled onto some of the worst value tariffs on the market.

Energy bills could rise by £63 million as 57 fixed deals from 16 suppliers finish at the end of November[1][2], according to new data from Uswitch.com, the comparison and switching service.

The 816,000 households affected could see their bills rise by £155 on average as they will move automatically onto more expensive Standard Variable Tariffs[3], which are among the worst value energy plans on the market.

With these deals ending at the end of November, time is running out for consumers to avoid paying more for their energy.

Switching onto a cheaper plan could help bill payers avoid the price hike. The cheapest deal is currently the Fix'd 20 19.0 tariff from Outfox the Market at £821.40 fixed for 12 months.

Energy customers can use the Uswitch online guide to find out if their deal is ending soon and compare the best deals to move to.

Sarah Broomfield, energy expert at Uswitch.com, said: “Customers often get caught out when their fixed energy plan ends and they are moved automatically onto a standard variable tariff that ends up costing them more money.

“This is a particularly busy time of year with Christmas on the way, and it’s easy to forget to change supplier — but not switching could come with a hefty £155 price tag attached.

“No one should be paying more than they need to for their energy, and as we head deep into winter, now is the time to check when your deal is coming to an end.

“If you’re struggling to work out how to check when your tariff is due to end, you can use our online guide to point you in the right direction.”
