Uswitch comments on Shell £1.4m fine from Ofcom

Ofcom has fined Shell Energy £1.4 million for breaching the regulator’s rules after failing to let 73,000 people know that their contracts were coming to an end.

Richard Neudegg, director of regulation at Uswitch comments: “It’s absolutely right that Shell Energy has faced consequences for breaching Ofcom’s rules on end of contract notifications.

“Since 2020, all broadband, phone, pay-TV and mobile phone providers have been required to notify customers when their contract is about to expire. This is so important as it lets customers know that they should start shopping around for a better deal.

“Uswitch data shows that households who switch on their broadband save an average of £179 at the end of their contract.

“In addition to failures to send notifications, in some cases thousands were misled with incorrect information on what prices would be once their contract ended, again putting them at a disadvantage when it comes to finding the best deal. Customers affected should already have been refunded by Shell Energy, however, those with any concerns about this should not hesitate to contact their provider.”
