Uswitch comments as driverless car trials begin on public roads

Commenting on the announcement that driverless cars will today start to be tested on public roads for the first time, Rod Jones, insurance expert at Uswitch.com, says: “After months of testing, it’s exciting to see driverless cars finally hitting Britain’s public roads. But our research shows that many drivers expect the road to driverless cars will be bumpy, with robots finding some of our driving habits confusing.

“Flashing your lights to let someone out of a junction may seem obvious and add a human touch to motoring, but these courteous gestures could be a huge blind spot for autonomous vehicles. This could make it difficult, at first, for humans and robots to drive side by side.

“It’s vital that these road tests are rigorous, so that driverless cars on our roads can become a reality.”
