Uswitch comments on ONS Crime Survey stats

Commenting on the publication of the Office of National Statistics (ONS) Crime Survey stats, which show that bank and credit account fraud make up over two-thirds of reported cybercrime incidents last year and industry data showing a 39% increase in fraud on UK-issued cards, Tashema Jackson, money expert at Uswitch.com, said: “With fraud at an all time high, it’s clear that fraudsters are developing new and smarter scams to exploit the gaps in our financial defences.

“Our research shows that more than half of consumers use current accounts to hold their hard-earned savings – making them enticing targets for scammers. This puts a greater responsibility on banks to stay on top of the tricks being used to dupe consumers, especially as customers are reliant on their banks putting processes in place to limit the chances of fraudsters escaping with stolen cash.

“While there are now a high number of sophisticated scams which many of us could fall for, responsibility doesn’t just lie with the banks. It is important that consumers stay vigilant and investigate any suspicious activity – acting quickly could make all the difference.”
