Uswitch comments on latest Ofgem energy switching figures

Commenting on today’s announcement from Ofgem that 7.7 million gas or electricity switches took place in 2016, representing a six-year high and 28% increase on 2015, Claire Osborne, energy expert at Uswitch.com, says: “The fact that so many consumers took control of their energy bills last year is a very welcome sign.

“This increase in switching reflects that significant progress was made in the energy market after the CMA published its package of remedies last summer. A six-year high shows that consumers are more confident than ever when it comes to switching energy – it is crucial that we build on this momentum, implementing all the CMA’s remedies and giving them time to make a full impact.

“Millions of households on poor value standard tariffs across the country are already paying a staggering £3.6 billion per year more for their energy than they need to, and further price increases from EDF, npower, Scottish Power, Co-operative Energy and First Utility are all due to land in the next few weeks. As a result, these households – many of whom are already struggling to afford their bills – will find themselves paying even more for their energy this year if they don’t take action now. By shopping around and switching to a fixed deal, they could save up to £618 and protect against any more unwelcome price rises.”
