Uswitch advises Norwich and Peterborough customers to switch now

Commenting on the news that Norwich and Peterborough (N&P) customers are struggling to transfer their current account to a new provider, after the building society announced it is closing 100,000 current accounts on 31st August, Tom Lyon, money expert at Uswitch.com, said “It’s an outrage that N&P customers could be left without a current account come the end of August.

“Bank accounts are essential for consumers to perform basic financial tasks like being paid, receiving a pension and paying your household bills by direct debit – often at a discount. When their current account closes in August N&P customers will be at risk of missing paying the bills they have set up from their old account. This could not only result in essential services such as gas or electric being cut off, but could ultimately negatively impact their credit score.

“As a further blow, N&P customers are likely to miss out on some of the most lucrative switching incentives currently available, as the building society is not part of the Current Account Switching Service (CASS). This means customers are losing out on up to £200 for switching to a new account, and are going to have to update their payments and direct debits manually.

“If you have a current account with N&P, don’t wait until the 31st August deadline to take action – start applying for a new account now. Make sure you have a list of all direct debits and other payments that are made from your account so nothing is missed when you switch to your new provider.

“If you feel you’ve been treated unfairly by the building society, you should complain to them directly or take your complaint to the Financial Ombudsman Service.”
