Uswitch comments on Watchdog report on Virgin Media failing to deliver promised broadband speeds

Ahead of reports that Watchdog will tonight feature Virgin Media for failing to deliver broadband speeds, Ewan Taylor-Gibson, Broadband expert atUswitch.com, comments: By their very nature broadband speeds will fluctuate and are subject to local variations.

“It’s important that customers feel they are receiving the service they have signed up to. Issues like this can arise when the expectations set by providers fail to meet the expectations of the customer.

“There’s been much discussion around ‘up-to’ speeds, which only require 10% of customers to achieve the speed in order for it to be used in adverts, versus the benefits of using a measure of the national ‘average speed’.

“The reality is that neither figure can tell you if there are local network or congestion issues with your chosen broadband provider. What customers really want to know is the estimated average and minimum speed they can expect each provider to deliver to their property and this should be prominent in the sales process.

“Providers must commit to setting expectations around broadband speeds and if they fail to deliver, consumers should be able to walk away from their contract penalty free.”
