uSwitch comments on the Autumn Budget

Commenting on plans to invest in a range of digital initiatives – such as 5G mobile networks and fibre broadband – in the Autumn Budget, Ernest Doku, mobiles expert at uSwitch.com, says: “The Government has today reiterated its commitment to 5G and fibre rollout, something that will no doubt act as reassurance for those keen to see the UK’s digital infrastructure boosted.

“With a pledge to deliver high speed internet and mobile connections on trains – which will no doubt please the 30% of mobile users who face reception issues on trains[1] – trials are planned to start on the Trans-Pennine route, connecting Leeds, Manchester and Liverpool.

“This could have the added benefit of boosting productivity, removing that all too frustrating digital void that leaves thousands of commuters unable to work as they head into the office.

“While these pledges signal the Government’s ongoing support for the evolution of digital technologies – and this is clearly no bad thing – today’s Budget will come as little comfort to consumers still suffering from unreliable broadband or patchy mobile signal. The Government must ensure these consumers are not left behind.”
