Uswitch comments on Ofcom’s mobile switching decision

Commenting on Ofcom’s mobile switching decision, Richard Neudegg, head of regulation at Uswitch.com, says: “It is encouraging to see Ofcom taking steps to make it easier for customers to take their mobile number between mobile providers.

“Mobile customers will be able to text their current provider for the code required to keep their number when moving network. However, consumers will have wait a while for these changes, with Ofcom setting the deadline for implementation to 1 July 2019.

“Our own research from earlier this year found that while one in five thought text-to-switch would make them more likely to switch provider, more than double would have been encouraged to change under a gaining-provider led process, the alternative system that Ofcom decided against. While it’s disappointing Ofcom did not go further, this is still an improvement that will make it easier for more customers to get a better deal.

“When it comes to the mobile market, more can be done if we want consumers to be better empowered when selecting the service that is right for them. Ofcom should also be looking at ways to open up information about mobile coverage and ensure that customers are notified when their contract period comes to an end.

“Consumers shouldn’t wait until 1 July 2019 to get a better deal. If you’re out of contract you can switch now and save up to £98 a year – and you might even benefit from improved service too.
