uSwitch comments on Ofcom’s mobile switching decision

Commenting on Ofcom’s mobile switching decision, Richard Neudegg, head of regulation at, says: “It is encouraging to see Ofcom taking steps to make it easier for customers to take their mobile number between mobile providers.

“Mobile customers will be able to text their current provider for the code required to keep their number when moving network. However, consumers will have wait a while for these changes, with Ofcom setting the deadline for implementation to 1 July 2019.

“Our own research from earlier this year found that while one in five thought text-to-switch would make them more likely to switch provider, more than double would have been encouraged to change under a gaining-provider led process[1], the alternative system that Ofcom decided against. While it’s disappointing Ofcom did not go further, this is still an improvement that will make it easier for more customers to get a better deal.

“When it comes to the mobile market, more can be done if we want consumers to be better empowered when selecting the service that is right for them. Ofcom should also be looking at ways to open up information about mobile coverage and ensure that customers are notified when their contract period comes to an end.

“Consumers shouldn’t wait until 1 July 2019 to get a better deal. If you’re out of contract you can switch now and save up to £98 a year – and you might even benefit from improved service too.[2]

About us

Launched in September 2000, uSwitch is an online and telephone price comparison and switching service, helping consumers get a better deal on gas, electricity, broadband, TV services, mobiles and personal finance products including mortgages, credit cards, car and home insurance. Last year we saved UK consumers over £278 million on their energy bills alone.

Customers can sign up to an account that automatically monitors the energy market and notifies them when they can move to a cheaper tariff, while broadband customers can conduct a speed test to find out how fast their broadband is and identify the best deal for their postcode.

The multi award-winning 'Switching Made Simple' app allows customers to compare energy, broadband, credit card, mobile and SIM-only deals – and uSwitch also has a UK contact centre manned by energy and broadband experts. Customers can post their latest energy bills to FREEPOST USWITCH to receive a free call back and be guided through the comparison process, or they can email with their postcode and usage details.

uSwitch is owned by ZPG, which operates some of the UK’s most trusted digital brands that help empower smarter property and household decisions including Zoopla, Money, PrimeLocation and SmartNewHomes.
