Ten Energy tariffs classified 'gold' in Uswitch Green Accreditation

  • Ten green energy tariffs have received the highest Gold classification from Uswitch’s Green Accreditation — with 38 classified eco deals overall[1]

  • Six tariffs from Good Energy, three from GEUK and one from British Gas received a Gold rating for sourcing the most renewable energy[1]

  • Tariffs from Scottish Power, EDF and Octopus Energy got Silver, while 21 tariffs from other suppliers were classified as Bronze[1]

  • Octopus Energy and OVO Energy received special commendations for green initiatives for Electric Vehicles, upgrading homes and off-peak energy trials[3]

  • The Uswitch Green Accreditation — led by a panel of independent experts — helps consumers understand green tariffs and the different approaches suppliers are taking on renewable energy

  • Uswitch.com calls on suppliers to do more to help consumers be more green with tariffs and other initiatives.

Ten green energy tariffs from three suppliers have received the highest Gold classification[1] by the Uswitch Green Accreditation, which recognises the deals that source the most renewable energy.

Six tariffs submitted by Good Energy, three from GEUK and one from British Gas were judged to be market leading for their green credentials[1] by an independent panel of experts brought together by the price comparison and switching service Uswitch.com. Overall, every tariff offered by Good Energy and GEUK has been green accredited.

Four tariffs from Scottish Power, three from Octopus Energy and two from EDF Energy reached the Silver standard, while 19 tariffs were classified Bronze[1].

In addition to giving accreditation for individual tariffs, the panel gave special commendations for the first to Octopus Energy and OVO Energy for their green energy initiatives[3].

Each supplier received a special commendation in the ‘Mobility’ category, recognising their efforts in making Electric Vehicles more accessible and affordable for customers beyond just offering a tariff specially designed for Electric Vehicles[3].

Their other commendations came in the ‘Future Homes’ category. Octopus Energy was recognised for its trials to shift energy consumption to off-peak periods, while OVO Energy was commended for its holistic approach to upgrading homes by installing heat pumps and insulation to make homes more energy efficient[3].

The Uswitch Green Accreditation is the first scheme to categorise tariffs into Bronze, Silver and Gold categories, with the aim of helping consumers better understand green tariffs and the different approaches suppliers are taking on renewable energy[1].

The categories recognise tariffs based on the level of renewable energy suppliers buy directly, and the amount of investment they are making to support the growth of renewable energy.

What each classification means:

Consumers will be able to see the details of a green tariff and whether it has received Green Accreditation on the Uswitch Green Accreditation site.

Justina Miltienyte, head of policy at Uswitch.com, comments: “Despite the upheaval in the energy market over the past year, consumers still want to do their bit for the environment, so it's great to see that there are ten Gold tariffs being offered.

“However, suppliers must continue to find ways to help consumers go green, whether through their tariffs or other initiatives.

“OVO Energy and Octopus Energy are making significant progress by offering innovative initiatives around the home and transport that help people not just reduce their energy bills, but also cut their carbon footprint.

“We hope to see more suppliers follow in their footsteps and launch further schemes which could receive special commendations next year.”
