New Google Nexus tablet could take a bite out of the iPad

Commenting on the announcement that Google is to launch a new Nexus 7 tablet later this year, Ernest Doku, telecoms expert at Uswitch.com, says: “Like the original Nexus 7, the Nexus 7 2 is a generously equipped tablet for such a good price. With an entry-level asking price of just £150 it’s neatly positioned to take a bite out of Apple’s tablet domination.

“Fortunately, the value price tag hasn’t led to a compromise in features. The new model has a more powerful processor and an improved resolution which is considerably better quality than its mini-tablet rival – the iPad mini. It has also been slimmed down and weighs less than its predecessor.

“All of these upgrades should see the Nexus 7 2 at least match the estimated 8 million sales of its older sibling, even in the face of more competition from HTC’s mooted mini tablet and the prospect of a Retina Display-equipped iPad mini. The addition of surround sound is also a real bonus for those who love watching movies on the go. And the great news is that all these extras won’t affect the battery life – in fact the new Nexus 7 will have an extra hour.

“Like other Nexus devices, the Nexus 7 2 debuts a new version of Google’s Android operating system, but it’s one that’s only scarcely different. That might put off some of the more technically minded Android apostles, but it’s unlikely to bother price-conscious users who the Nexus 7 2 is principally aimed at.

“However, the Nexus 7 2’s Achilles heel – as with all Android tablets – is the quality of the apps available compared to the iPad mini and other Apple tablets. The relatively slim volume of Android apps that are optimised for tablets is also a problem, meaning that even if they work, they often have limited functionality.

“So, when it comes to user experience, for now anyway, the iPad and iPad mini may remain top of the heap. But for those happy with a limited selection of apps and change from £200, the new Nexus could be the answer.”
