Samsung Galaxy S4 trails iPhone 5 and 4s as it falls short of expectations

  • iPhone 5 still the UK’s favourite mobile phone for June – topping the chart for a fourth consecutive month

  • Samsung’s Galaxy S4 has so far failed to emulate the S3’s resounding success

  • Samsung Galaxy range still dominates with five handsets in the top ten, compared to Apple’s three

  • No new entries this month, despite the recent high-profile launch of the Nokia Lumia 925.

Once again, Apple’s iPhone 5 remains Britain’s most popular smartphone. Pipping its cheaper and older sibling iPhone 4S – in number two – to the post, Apple’s domination of the top two spots – due in large part to retailer offers – looks set to remain.

That’s according to the Uswitch.com Mobile Tracker, based on live searches, pre-orders and sales, which showed little change throughout June as mobile fans stuck to their guns.

For a third consecutive month, Samsung’s Galaxy S4 resides in third place, never quite living up to the massive hype of its April launch, or the unrivalled success of the Samsung Galaxy S3. This older model was the UK’s number one phone for 10 months in a row, and is still in the top 10 chart at number five – in spite of its age.

Buyers of the S4 will enjoy a 13-megapixel camera and eye-tracking screen technology, but industry experts argue that these innovations were not enough of a departure from the stellar Galaxy S3.

But in spite of this setback, Samsung’s Galaxy range is still dominating the chart. The S4’s older siblings, the Galaxy S2, S3 as well as the Ace and S3 Mini mean it has five handsets in the top ten, showing how Samsung’s full range is still capturing the attention of mobile fans.

Number one handset – once again, for the fourth consecutive month, the Apple iPhone 5 is the UK’s most popular phone.

New entries – no new devices managed to crack the top ten in June, but the Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini clawed its way back in, securing the South Korean manufacturer half the spots in the chart.

Biggest losers – the big-screened Samsung Galaxy Note 2 has dropped out of the top 10 altogether, and the mid-June launch of Nokia’s Lumia 925 seems to have missed the mark, with the Finnish manufacturer failing to make a dent in the table.

Ernest Doku, telecoms expert at Uswitch.com, says: “Samsung really caught lightning in a bottle with the Galaxy S3, delivering an affordable and appealing iPhone alternative at the perfect moment. But the Galaxy S4 has so far failed to grab the attention of smartphone fans in quite the same way.

“The fact the S4 is tracking below analysts’ expectations could explain why the South Korean giant has brought the launches of its Galaxy S4 Zoom, S4 Active and S4 Mini to the fore – a trio of smartphones targeting specific sectors of the market with a laser-like focus. Its strategy has always been to dominate the market with multiple devices, rather than focusing on a single effort and, thus far, it has proven a very successful approach.

“The iPhone’s assured position of three spots in the top ten speaks volumes of the longevity and enduring appeal of Apple handsets. Three years is a lifetime in smartphone terms, and few devices can hold their own in terms of features today. However, the iPhone 4 – released back in June 2010 – is now available from as little as £15 per month, making it not only a fantastic device, but also incredible value for money.

“The mid-month launch of Nokia’s Lumia 925 is likely a major factor as to why it hasn’t charted in June, but it is still a strong handset and certainly an attractive, worthy successor to the Lumia 920. A concern lies in that attention is already moving towards the next flagship device from the Finnish manufacturer, set to be revealed on July 11.

“The swift announcement of another megapixel-toting effort from Nokia so soon after the 925’s release has certainly taken some of the wind out of its sails, and it could well be lost in the smartphone shuffle this summer.”
