Price cut – ScottishPower customers find out where they stand

For ScottishPower customers, the wait is finally over as the supplier announces that it will decrease its energy prices by 3.3% from the 31st January. This will bring its average standard energy bill down from £1,325 following it’s 8.6% price rise on the 6th December, to £1,284 a year. In addition there will be a £12 rebate, which will be paid in Autumn 2014.

This move follows the Government’s changes to environmental and social levies that are paid through household energy bills. It now leaves just npower and SSE customers in the dark about when and how much relief they will get on their bills following hefty rises of 10.4% and 8.2% respectively in October last year. British Gas was the first of the big six to part reverse its winter price hike on the 1st January by 3.2%, while EDF Energy limited its price increase in anticipation of the Government’s changes and E.ON was able to factor the changes into its hike due later this month.

Tom Lyon, energy expert at Uswitch.com, says: “While it’s great news that ScottishPower has finally told its customers about the reductions they’ll be enjoying on their energy bills, SSE and npower’s customers are still left in the dark and struggling with sky-high energy costs. We strongly implore suppliers to not only offer relief soon, but also to backdate any reductions so that consumers can feel the benefit during the coldest months of the year.

“While suppliers are delaying, consumers shouldn’t. There is currently over £300 difference between the cheapest and the most expensive tariff on the market meaning that consumers can give themselves an even more substantial price cut by switching to a cheaper deal.”
